Spreads are variable and can widen during news, rollover, low liquidity, and market opens/closes. If you want the most authoritative spec: MT5
MT5 → Market Watch → right-click symbol → Specification.
What to look for in your trading platform
Ask = price you buy at
Bid = price you sell at
Spread = Ask − Bid (your built-in transaction cost)
Your chart prints the Bid by default. If you want to see Ask, enable the Ask line in chart properties.
If you didn’t know this: congrats, you just saved yourself a future rant.
Symbol specs
(the parts that change your risk)
Spreads are just one cost. Risk is also contract size, margin/leverage, and trading hours.
Contract size
how much “1 lot” actually is
Trading hours
when liquidity is real vs. when it’s a ghost town
Leverage/margin
how much room you actually have
Swaps/rollover
the overnight tax (or credit) for holding
Why spreads widen
(don’t take it personally)
We are not out to get you, we don’t manipulate spreads
to fail your account. Sometime spreads vary, even by a lot.
