Martingale / grid: allowed, restricted, or “depends how you use it”?

Severity Important

TL;DR

It “depends”—we don’t ban the label. We ban the behavior. If it stays within limits, it can survive mathematically… but it’s also the #1 way to turn a good account into confetti.

How it works

  • PropXP’s stance is practical: risk limits are king. If your martingale/grid blows daily/max loss, you’re done.
  • Even if you don’t breach, extreme overexposure / one-sided averaging / gambling patterns can trigger risk review.

Common gotchas

  • “It’s not martingale, it’s ‘position building’”, cool story. If size escalates into outrageous risk, it’s still outrageous risk.
  • Grid strategies love chop… until they meet trend + spread widening.
  • If your method requires infinite doubling, it’s not a strategy, it’s a ticking bomb.
  • If one sequence can eat half your daily limit, you’re probably trading too close to the edge.

Example

You start with 0.10 lots, then 0.20, 0.40, 0.80 into drawdown. Price trends 30 pips more and your daily loss is gone. That’s not “bad luck”: that’s the strategy’s default outcome.
