Is news trading allowed? (Challenge vs Funded)
TL;DR
- Challenges: news trading is allowed.
- Funded + Instant Funding: holding/trading through restricted news requires the News Trading Add-On. Without it, there’s a blackout window.
How it works
“Restricted” or “Red News” = high-impact scheduled events (think CPI, NFP, rate decisions, etc.). On common calendars these are marked as high impact / red. To see the news marked in red, use the Economic Calendar page, or the one embedded in your trading platform.
- Challenges: you can open/close trades around news.
- Funded + Instant Funding:
- With News Trading Add-On: you may hold and trade through restricted news.
- Without it: you must be flat 5 minutes before, and you must not open or close trades inside the restricted window (until 5 minutes after the news drops).
Common gotchas
- “It was only a quick scalp”: red news doesn’t care about your hold time.
- “But I didn’t click anything”: pending orders/automation can still execute and they count.
- Spreads can get feral around red news. If you’re near drawdown, you will get burned more likely than not.
- If you’re unsure whether an event is “red”: assume it is, and trade like an adult (or just buy the add-on).

Example
You’re funded and CPI is at 13:30. If you don’t have the News Trading add-on, you close everything by 13:25 and you don’t open/close anything until 13:35.
