Can I modify SL/TP manually if an EA placed the initial SL?

TL;DR

Yes, you can modify SL/TP manually. The only catch: if the EA is still running and managing the trade, it might change it back depending on the programming.

How it works

  • MT5 lets you modify a position’s SL/TP (Trade tab > modify), regardless of whether it was initially set by an EA.
  • Whether your manual edit “sticks” depends on the EA logic:
  • Trade manager EA might respect your manual levels, or it might re-apply its own rules on the next tick.
  • If you want full manual control: pause/disable the EA for that symbol/account (or turn off its SL/TP management setting, if it has one).

Common gotchas

  • If you drag SL tighter to “reduce risk,” great, until the EA widens it again because it thinks it’s “helping” (classic, happened to the best of us.)
  • If you remove SL entirely and price dumps, that’s not “freedom,” that’s “future regret.”
  • You’re still responsible for risk limits even if an EA is doing the clicking.

Example

Your EA sets a 50-pip SL. You manually tighten it to 25 pips. If the EA is coded to “always keep SL at 50,” it will push it back out. Solution: disable SL management in the EA (or disable the EA, or reprogram it).
